government rebate problem with ford dealer / sound ford in renton

Two weeks ago I purchased a new Ford Flex from Sound Ford in Renton, WA utilizing the CARS rebate. At time of sale, I was given the $4500 rebate for my trade in. A deal was made, financing secured, and paperwork signed. Then I received a call from the dealership stating that after submitting the federal forms, they are to receive only $3500 and are calling to collect the additional $1000. I have a finance contract stating that I was given a total of $8000 in rebates, CARS rebate included, and now Sound Ford is rescinding the agreement which was signed in good faith and at no time was it mentioned that I would be responsible should the rebate be denied. Am I responsible for paying the additional $1000?

They are bound by the contract and if they said you would get 4500 for the rebate they are responsible for that. If the contract was not firm on that point they would have to refund you every dollar you paid and let you go to another dealer. You might also report this to your congress person as this is not the way this was supposed to work!
