Late last summer I received a cheque in the mail for $25.00 from Universal Power, I never cashed it, not knowing what it was for.
As time wore on I realized my Hydro bill was doubling every month. I went to Brant County Power and asked for them to check my house for a short in the wiring at which time they informed me that I was somehow locked into an electricity rate plan. I have never enrolled into this plan nor does anyone have power-of-attorney to do this for me. Even my children are not of age to do so mistakenly. In fact I was away for the time they said this contract was signed. On my behalf Brant County Power asked for a copy of said contract and low and behold the signature is not mine. We think it says Theresa something, my name is Bob, big difference. The only thing that I can think of is that I had a friend watching the house while I was away, but even if she signed it she had no authority to. Every month this company keeps taking my money, I have no choice but to pay it or my hydro will be disconnected. I informed them very vehemently of the situation back in October when I found out about this and yet they continue to take my money and not return my phone calls. I finally broke down and wrote a very formal letter stating my case and informing them that I will seek legal advice if they don't stop taking my money and that they needed to reimburse me. Today I received a letter from them saying I owe an early cancellation fee of $630.00. Please someone help me. They've already taken over $1,300.00 Thank You |

Based on what you say here, you could file suit against them (or at least threaten to do so) in small claims court or in regular court; filing in small claims court is easier and requires no attorney...you could try to collect all of the costs and damages that you incurred.
