Comp Cams Bad Tech Support Blew my Engine
I was putting a brand new $10,000 engine in my car. On the new distributor was a warning tag instructing me to cal the manufactuer of the cam shaft in my engine to determine the proper material drive gear to put on the distributor. So, I called Comp Cams, as they made the camshaft in my engine. They told me that the gear that came on my distributor was not correct and to change it a hardended steel gear. They do not dispute that they told me this, and they continue to tell customers the same information. I spent an extra $125 to have the gear changed and then put the distributor in the engine. This is a simple procedure and ther is no way to do it incorrectly. After only 150 miles on this brand new engine, the camshaft shredded pushing metal filings all through the engine. This ment pulling it out of the car and a total rebuild. Remeber only 150 miles were on the engine. When I called the engine builder, he immediately told me Comp Cams was wrong and the proper gear was the one that came on the distributor in the first place. I called Comp Cams and they insist the information they gave me was correct. So since the only way to prove it was to rebuild the engine exactly the same only this time using the original distributor gear that came on it and see if that made any difference. The manager of Comp Cams agreed that if the rebuild made it to 1000 miles would be a fair test. It has been eight months and the engine now has 1000 miles and is running flawlessly. I think this proves beyond a reasonable doubt that it was the distributor drive gear that caused the problem. Now after eight months and proving my point, their answer is that they will replace the camshaft, but take not responsibility of their bad tech support or the $4,000 it cost me to get it fixed. The offe for a new camshaft was not made until more then a month after my engine had already been repaired wich was far too late to do me any good. I suppose they want me to hang it on my wall. Ifeel they are responsible for the information they give out, especially when it can cause so much damage.
