Default Received Check from City

Two years ago I replaced my sewer line, which required a permit and a $500 deposit to the City in case we did not properly concrete the sidewalk to their standards.

Out of the blue, a $500 check showed up reference that project....i believe that the deposit was already returned two years ago (based on my wifes credit card statement).

I'm ready to return the check and tell them they had a mistake.

What's the law say about these situations.

thanks

You need to do so if you know it is a mistake. But ask them first. Maybe it was not actually returned.
