No you don't have to be a lawyer.

But frankly in any court other than small clams it is very difficult to handle it all as a non-lawyer.
And you normally can only file for yourself, you can't represent others the way an attorney does.

No, you do not need to be a lawyer to file a suit but to win it you would probably want to hire one who knows the tricks of the trade.

Filing a lawsuit in superior (or federal) court against a major maufacturer is foolhardy. To even ask the question shows one knows zip about the law and legal system. A major company's skilled attorneys would have the case dismissed in the first weeks.

Besides, it is not necessary to file a suit over asbestos damage for settlement was reached years ago.

Anyone that is a U.S. citizen has the right to represent themselves in court and file a lawsuit on their own behalf. A person that represents themselves in this manner is called an Attorney Pro Se. If you decide to file a lawsuit Pro Se you must still comply with all the rules of procedure in the court. To do this you must prepare all the paperwork in accordance to the law, submit that to the right authorities and in the right time period, and comply with the rules of the court while it the case is being tried. When you file a lawsuit this way you must have enough knowledge of the system to ensure that your case is not dismissed.

This is an ancient thread but for information purposes in most asbestos cases you don't have to file a lawsuit. The major players all have claims opened and you fill out their claim forms.

Most asbestos claims that are filed are in Federal court.
