EEK! HP Pavilion dv9000 (and others) Overheating Damage/ Motherboard Failure

Does anyone know of any legal action with regard to the problem below?

I believe there is a significant problem with several series of HP notebooks including, but not limited to, the dv9000. It appears that it has to do with the heat management of the computer. The processor gets far too hot. This issue is manifested in several symptoms. The mechanical (hinge break) is the most obvious. But more nefarious is the outright motherboard failure, usually preceded by wireless failure (AMD models) and/or Video issues (Both AMD and Intel). I venture to guess that the motherboard cannot handle the graphics card or something along those lines. HP KNOWS about this as evident here:
HP Pavilion dv2000/dv6000/dv9000 and Compaq Presario v3000/v6000 Series Notebook PCs -  HP Limited Warranty Service Enhancement
However, they have limited their responsibilty to the AMD version of the computers. But as I have spent 10s of hours researching this, it appears to me the problem spans most 9000 series models, including the Intel Centrino models like mine. An HP customer service rep implied very deliberatly (and somewhat under his breath) that I should keep pressuring them to extend my warranty because this should not happen to a computer that is only 15 months old. I think the bean counters may believe the cost of fixing outways the possibility of a lawsuit. I hope we can get some help on this. We should expect more from companies like HP.

Thank you for posting this! I was getting ready to spend $600 for a new motherboard and found this posting. HP is sending me a shipping container to return my PC to them for a free repair/replacement. This should take about two weeks turn-around.

Is yours one of the AMD ones? If not, how did you get them to send you a box?

This is the original poster. Still have not resolved this with HP. They continue to block my attempts at service. The service center won't even troubleshoot the issue because "HP doesn't let [them] mess with motherboard stuff." I have begun emailing NVIDIA also now. Here are some more resources.

Angry re: HP Pavilion dv9000 (and others) Overheating Damage/ Motherboard Failure

My daughter had an HP 6000 motherboard melt and today my HP 9000 motherboard went "pop" and it no longer starts. My 9000 always ran hot. HP should replace our computers. It is not right with all of the info about hinges and overheating all over the web that they have not stood behind their product.

I've had my dv9417ca for over a year - bought it in Aug 2007 - and I started developing problems in February. The biggest two problems would be the battery not charging (I have to take my power cord everywhere) and the wireless dropping, along with a few other problems that I suspect may be related. I couldn't get it fixed until May, and entirely due to my own laziness I didn't look at the issue properly and didn't find out about this warranty program until a month ago.

Now that I'm back at college I can't send away my computer that I rely on. Hope to do so over the Christmas break but it annoys me how much this issue has affected me, particularly since it's my own damn fault that I didn't really troubleshoot this over the summer.

For the record I have an AMD version, so I guess this falls under the warranty. That really sucks for you intel guys

Unhappy re: HP Pavilion dv9000 (and others) Overheating Damage/ Motherboard Failure

I have a DV 9000 too. HP said it was not covered under the "enhanced" extended warrentee because the serial number was not listed for recall. After talking with HP several times they agreed to include my DV 9000. (video adapter overheated)
Bottom line is HP fixed my DV 9000 for free and covered the new motherboard with a 90 day garrentee.
It has been 92 days since HP fixed my DV 9000.

TODAY THE VIDEO ADAPTER BURNED UP AGAIN!

When you send your HP dv 9??? to HP for thier generous free repair offer. Remember the laptop you get back will have another defective board with same problem as the first and will follow the same path.
I assumed Hp would install a revised motherboard with a fix for the orginal problem. Never Ass-u-me anything. Hp will never recieve my support again.

Hp Tech did not want to talk to me today. I asked to speak to a superviser he actually said he had no superviser. His superviser was in America and that department was closed.

Good luck and God Bless,
Mark

Law Office Working on possible case:
HP Pavilion Notebooks (HPQ) Class Action Lawsuit

If your hinge is broken. Check this site. Be sure and search the entire list of product numbers. My laptop dv9235 has a product number under the dv9000 list.

HP Pavilion dv9000/dv9100/dv9200/dv9400 Series Notebook PCs*-* HP Limited Service Enhancement for Left Display Hinge*
