Unhappy Re: HP Pavilion dv9000 (and others) Overheating Damage/ Motherboard Failure

I'm in the UK. Purchased a DV9088EA Pavilion in 12/2007. Back in May this year the left hand hinge failed and I had to purchase a new hinge assembly and top cover to fix. Was unaware of the HP Extended Warranty program for this problem so ended up paying for the parts. Machine was registered with HP when I purchased it but received no notification from HP that the unit was subject to a manufacturing defect (makes you wonder what the point is of HP asking you to register the machine if they don't use the data so gathered to inform customers of problems!).

A few days ago the machine failed with a black screen on power up. After 5 attempts to contact HP support was told that the unit was subject to a year's warranty extension because of a video chip/overheating problem but now that my unit is over 2 years old, it's no longer covered and I would have to pay for a motherboard replacement. Escalated the call to their Customer Services/complaints department but they refused to offer any help. So a unit bought 3 years ago for nearly $2000 which I have spent another $200 fixing a design fault is now useless unless I spend another $500. What a joke!

I always thought quite well of HP and put quite a lot of business their way through my PC training business but no more!! I've registered for the class action but probably not much good given that I am in the UK. I will never buy or recommend an HP unit again.

Same problem here. Out of warranty but HP said they would fix it due to a defective motherboard. They sent me shipping instructions and about a week later they called and told me that the motherboard had sustained water damage....Not so! Anyhow the sent it back without repairing it. Go figure. Is that a way to do business or what?

Seriously dude, HP should have recalled these models! Mine just took a crap after 2.5 years. Not acceptable. Just google it and there are endless pages of people with this problem. HP will loose alot from not stepping up!

Same issues as everyone else. Pavilion 9207, with nVIDIA 7600. My problems have just started appearing at 2.5 years since purchase, screen goes crazy, then goes black. I shut it down and restart and problem will appear again. Right know it is happening if the machine sets idle for 45 minutes or so.

Finally a door has been opened! Let the floodgates begin!

SJSU Student Wins Laptop Lawsuit Against HP - cbs5.com

Heres the video story!

Video Library - cbs5.com

I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw my same exact model Laptop on the news! An HP DV9000! Im watching the report with my mouth wide open and nodding my head to every issue and problem this student was having with his! The overheating, the run around with customer service. HP replaced my overheated & burned out motherboard once under Warrenty (1yr). And then I had to pay a 3rd party Computer guy to replace it again for the same problem after the warrenty expired several months later. The computer guys said that he see's this model alot, and for the exact same reason overheated motherboards! Has anyone else started a class action suit yet now that this student won his Lawsuit??? And he won back 3 times the amount he paid for his! I know my laptop is just a time bomb waiting to do the same thing its done twice already! I like HP! My home PC is also an HP, I just want a comparable replacement with no problems or my money back! Im definatly gonna look into it now that there is a light at the end of the tunnel!

My hp went out 1yr 1 week from date of purchase. Called hp and they said it was out of war. After many hrs complaining I decided to pay $400 and have it fixed. HP sent the box and later it came back brand new. 3 months and 1 week my laptop did the same thing. Was told by hp that it was out of warranty again. Tried to have the bill taken off my credit card. Laptop has sat under my desk and I now use a Toshiba. Gave up on hp (Chinese motherboards)

HP replaced my motherboard, bezel, wifi, etc on warranty. After warranty expired so did my internal microphone. Took to repair shop and the simple $20 off-site fix was impossible; HP refuses to release the parts so they charge $200 and it has to be sent in. Nice scam. Whined and had it done for free by HP. Yeah! It’s now 2.5 years and no wifi, black screen, freezing blue screen, it’s completely shot. Talked to warranty people and they offered the $400 repair for $259. But it doesn’t last so what’s the use? I suggest HP give everyone who bought one of these tech nightmares and is still WILLING to purchase an HP product a $500 gift voucher. I was just about to order the 13.3” HP business laptop Probook 5310M for $899, then I figured what for? My first laptop was a Toshiba Satellite A70 four years ago and there’s a class action suit against Toshiba because of this model. My next purchase was an HP DV9205 and there’s a class action suit. Moral of the story, don’t buy what I buy. My new theory is make them disposable. I need a laptop for its portability so I’ll continue to buy them. But instead of going relatively high end, I’m going low end. Acer here I come. I get a year’s warranty and if lasts longer, bonus. Neither brand name I’ve purchased so far has lasted so why not look to the alternative. Guess I could go for a Mac, but I’m just not into the tao of Steve. And I will be adding my name to the class action suit.
