Same here.....laptop has been overheating since day one. HP is very unhelpful as they try every trick possible to get money from you and not give you what you paid for. I bought this laptop in sept 2007 and it was literally the best hp 17 inchers you could buy with all options maxed out. Now it's slowly burning my hands and the RIGHT hinge broke about half a year ago meaning I cant; close my lappie rendering it to the state of a crappy desktop

BOO HP

I just found this site and use the phone number that someone provided (THANKS). The person that I spoke to was OK but I also think that he was very careful with what he was saying because I did mention this site and the brewing lawsuit and the link to the HP site, which did say (if you have one of the listed laptops) they would fix it for free.
This is the second time that I have had to send this laptop for an limited service enhancement, the first was with the wireless card issue. When I got it back in a note they said that they replaced the motherboard and the screen which I found odd because my laptop has a skin on it and if they did a replacement then I should have gotten the laptop back san skin, but the skin was right where I put it (I told the person I was talking to about this, just so he knew).
I am rather polite to Tech Helpdesk people mostly because that is what I do as a job and I do let them know that. I also know the more polite you are the more accommodating people become.
As a side note - They did not try to sell me a new laptop, the guy did try and say that if they found any other issue that HP would contact me, for a price quote - not to worry what I do for this is when I send the laptop in I put a note with it telling them I had a bench test done by a repair shop and I also take pictures of the laptop to stop the hanky panky, but frankly I should not have to do this, with HP or for that matter any other company.

I experienced the left hinge breaking on my HP Pavillion dv9000 last evening, 04/22/09. I purchased my notebook in March of 2007. This issue comes a few weeks after contacting HP for help for the first time regarding a wireless connection and a printer issue. I was told by the representatives, "I don't know much about computers" and "You don't want me helping you with your printer issues since I use my printer at home as a foot stool", respectively. I am dreading the telephone call today to discuss my left hinge issue.

I got my dv9000 refurbished from ebay. Same issues for me, intermittent wireless overheating, hing broke. I ran speedfan and the gpu temperature was running near 79, and thats on a cooling board with raiser. Mine was out of warranty so I took onboard the task to repair myself. got the manual online easy enough: http://h10032.www1.hp.com/ctg/Manual/c01311536.pdf only needed one screwdriver. to stop the overheating requires removing the gunk between the gpu and the heatsink (as well as the cpu/s) and replacing with arctic silver 5 paste. I fixed the hinge by following this guide: Indestructible repair for the broken HP DV 9000 laptop hinge & case

fortunately, it was only the black plastic screw holders that had snapped off, so I just set the mounts back in place with superglue and then used a heavy duty epoxy resin to keep them set.

it took all day to do this, and was fiddly to be sure. total cost was around $12 though. the hinge is working great and the temperature hasn't gone above 60 so far.

I hope that might be useful to anyone daring enough!

My 9030US was purchased in November 2006 and is not covered under this recall. I wish they could fix it for free but I know they will hassle me about it. By the time I fix it I could put the money toward a much newer machine. I am thinking of upgrading anyway at the end of the year. Noticed all new HP's hinges are much different. At least they improved the new ones.

Thumbs Down Re: HP Pavilion 9000 series hinge break and burn problem

The hinge problem is the least. In my case and in many other cases the heat caused the motherboard to burn, preceded by wireless and screen failing.

In my case, HP is trying to avoid responsibilities because I live in one country and bought it in another. But I lived in the country of purchase when I bought the faulty HP Pavillion. Just lame excuses.

HP is trying to run away from a clear design and project flaw.

Ok Folks...

So, i thought that this was all my fault, from pushing the screen too far back until i stumbled upon this site, so i went to a comp repair shop.

HP called me a couple days later and said that they would fix my motherboard "free" of charge and fix my keyboard for free, basically i only had to pay the computer shop 80 bucks for middle man. Now, i see the link between the motherboard issues and the hinge falling off...

does anyone know if you get a new motherboard will this issue return!!!

also, has anyone experienced the keyboard having an electric current run through it as they type?

Angry Re: HP Pavilion 9000 series hinge break and burn problem

Same problem with me. Motherboard burnt out. I spoke to HP UK who have offered to repair the laptop and guarantee the work for 3 months. ie just enough time to see me out of the extended warranty(which runs out in 2 months) that they offered that they had previously tried to charge me for. Effectively putting me back to square one and down a £100 to recover my lost data on the hard drive. What did Ian in Customer Support say when I said I don't want a broken laptop fixed that will break down again. "Go to the shop where you bought it from and take it up with them". Thanks for your bright suggestion Ian, but they didn't build the laptop you did.......so what are you going to do about it. "We will repair it" Why does it need to be repaired if it is less than 2 years old and it should do what I paid over £600 in good faith....SCAMMERS

The left hinge on my HP Pavillion 9000 broke June 8th, eight days after HP's "enhancement" program for this problem expired. When I spoke with a HP rep they told me they couldn't cover the repair for free but they would be happy to fix it for me to the tune of appx $200. This is bull. They got me once before with a 1 year old photosmart printer that would not register a new yellow ink cartridge and therefore would not print at all. They wouldn't repair it but I could "upgrade" for $150 bucks. I fell for it and now appx. 1 year later the "new" printer is starting to do the same thing!!! This is the last time I will buy HP. The rep didn't seem to be concerned that I have been a loyal HP customer with 3 HP computers and 4 HP printers. Let me know where to send donations to keep this site going and file the class action lawsuit. I'll send you the money HP was trying to extort from me. It will definetly be put to better use! wahoo183@centurytel.net
