UPDATE: Got off the phone with HP. Spoke with George who did not like my 20 questions and hung up, but did speak with Carol in the Exc. Customer Service Dept. and she stated that HP is very aware of the problem(s) hence why they are repairing it for free (Oooo lucky me) and that they will stand by their product if it does happen again. She did say that there is a recall and I said yes on the battery issue, she said no for this too; that is why they are repairing it for free. (yeah right) Again, we will see. I do highly recommend that all of you COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN, COMPLAIN and don't stop. Go to the top if you must, call back, file complaints with the BBB and CA. Don't roll over, this stuff cost us money. Which I do not have the luxury of pissing away!!

To all: without delay, add your machine to the heap, so they can begin the class action suit. They have been investigating this for a while.

To see just how global this issue, and other dastardly HP concerns, check this out:

I purchased my dv9000 18 months ago for $2400; yesterday black plastic pieces fell out of the RIGHT hinge. Contacted HP support who said there was a recall on the unit. The support tech at first stated that I could send the unit in for repair for $398, or purchase a new and better unit for $450 with free configuration. Then she said that the units were not being repaired but I could still purchase the newer and better unit for $450. THEN she said that I could purchase a unit that was configured better than my current unit for $1300. Then was transferred to sales who needed confirmation that the hinge problem wasn't be repaired. When he saw the configuration on my current unit (which was top of the line 18 months ago), he asked about the trade-up option and transferred me to the site - they are closed on Sunday. According to the trade-up site, my unit was not eligible for trade-up. However, looking at a comparable unit, the trade-in was only worth $200 even though the components work perfectly.

After spending $2400 for a top-of-the-line machine, a manufacturer's defect is found, I'm watching pieces of plastic spit out of the hinge. Now HP expects me to pay for a new unit? When a factory recall is issued on a vehicle, the manufacturer replaces it for free.

What's wrong with this picture?

What is the status of the class action lawsuit?

I think they are now fixing the left hinge for all purchasers as noted above.

But if your defect happened for the same reason, it is likely they will also fix for free if you push them a bit.
