To Unregistered of Jan 6 - you can get off your high horse. There IS NO documentation to read. There are just buttons to push with no explanation of what the effect will be. Yes, "sync" means synchronize, but unless some documentation explains HOW IT WORKS then how is a new user to know? You've been in IT a long time. Some of us are just users who weren't born knowing the lingo.
If you would like to contribute to the discussion, why not send us all _your_ documentation? That would make lots of people happy. By the way, where did you get it? PennyWise |

Thank you, William, for noticing the distress of the users who posted here. I really appreciate your jumping in and providing the link to how to get rid of Sync. Good customer service, guy!

What I don't understand is why there is not a backup software that can be installed onto the drive? I'd EVEN be willing to purchase something if they offered it, but they don't even give me that option!

My father uses the Sync software, and another problem it seems to have (in his case at least), is that even though his "My Pictures" directory is selected to be kept in-sync, if he creates a new folder within this directory, then attempts to sync up his Passport drive, it seems that the new folder is not automatically picked up in the synchronization, so he has to manually go and click the new-sub dir in the GUI in order for it to be included in the sync...
What kind of synchronization software excludes NEW sub-dirs of directories supposedly being kept in-sync? If you put a new file in the area, that gets picked up ok... Luckily, my father noticed this "caveat", so now realizes he needs to manually add any new directories into the sync program. Anybody else not aware of this "feature", then beware, as you might think you are keeping things in sync when in fact they are being ignored... |

I just got hosed using this damned software. My laptop was stolen from my office and I have been "synching" to WD Passport using WD Synch only to find out none of my files from the past 18 months are on the Passport. I don't know what this software was doing with it ran but it didn't copy **** to the Passport and when I went to download/recover/copy files from the Passport to my new PC, nothing was there.

To everyone saying "why didnt your read the instructions" You are a__h___s.
It doesnt come with instructions. It come with 3 pictures of how to install, once installed it gives a link to a support page. BTW my laptop isnt online all the time. This support page is really not a support page and gives more pictorial instructions. I defy anyone to show where the WD Sync software explains what it is really doing before hand. Can anyone make a rational argument as to why the software works in this manner? So Im making a sync'd (?) copy of a file so I can transfer it to another computer but due to the way the HD works I can never bring it back cause the HD will delete the file from it self. |

Guys,
Although this will not assist everybody you should know that files which were deleted by the software can be undeleted. Files deleted under any version of Windows are only marked as deleted. They are not actually deleted at all. Those files marked as deleted (and so not visible any more in explorer or dos) can be retrieved using the dos undelete command or one of several undelete commercial applications. Search for undelete.exe under Google and that should point you in the right direction. Note that if you continue to use your system, files could be overwritten with other files. Space used by files marked as deleted will be re-used as necessary by Windows when saving stuff. Hope that makes sense? If you have lost important stuff such as the photos one guy mentioned with his wife crying about the loss stop using your computer and talk to a professional to recover them immediately. If they are important but not that important try undelete. Hope that helps someone. |

Hello
If anyone is having this problem you should contact the Dmailer Support Team at Dmailer.com - portable backup - backup software - synchronize email - data backup they will try to recover your data. Also please note that this problem has been fixed and it is no longer possible to synchronise with a format computer but you must upgrade to version 8 and above. |

Hello,
They do also have a backup application you should have a look on there website as many users have said to do. There you will also find documentation for both products. The problem of new sub folders not being synchronized was fixed a long time ago you just need to update your software to at least Version 7. You can do this at either: Dmailer.com - portable backup - backup software - synchronize email - data backup (now also offers V8) Or www.wdc.com |

Synchronization makes another copy of the files on that drive. Backup does the same thing.
This whole "it's for syncing not for backup" is a distinction without a difference. Why synchronize something if you never intend to restore it from the alternate source? Why synchronize if you never intend to use that as a secondary (synonym: "backup") source for your data? Is the software purely aesthetic in function? |
