Default Charter of Rights Canada

What defence is used to a plantiff's claim that you have reported information from a person's criminal record without their permsission? We had a tenant who was threatening other tenants in the house and a police officer implied he had charged in the past with sexual assault. The tenant later provided evidence of the allegation when posed to him. Now he is trying to sue me for 10,000 for the above noted reason.
