Cool Sold Fridge To Neighbor - Won't Pay

Hello there....

I sold a refrigerator to my neighbor, who said that the fridge in the house she was moving into had just died a few days before. She was moving out of her boyfriends house and didn't have the money to pay us. Since we have known her for many years and she was a friend of my wife, we sold the fridge (in mint condition) to her for a very good price ($250.00) since we wanted to help her out. She only lives about a mile or 2 from us, however, she has stopped calling and she won't return my wife's calls. She had borrowed money from my wife before and always paid us back. Because of this, we did not get anything on paper. Since I have no physical proof of sale, am I just screwed? Do I have any options?

Thanks in advance,

Pete

Based on what you say here, you could file suit against her (or at least threaten to do so) in small claims court or in regular court; filing in small claims court is easier and requires no attorney...

Pete,
I have a feeling this goes much deeper than a $250 fridge. She's cut all communications for that? Fishy. Could it be that she's gotten mixed up with someone or something not so great? Lost a job or been fired? Rather than let $250 completely ruin a long time relationship, confront her on her turf. Well, maybe not you, but your wife. She will feel less defensive on her own turf most likely and it may go smoother if it's a girl/girl thing. It will be uncomfortable for a minute, right before she answers the door essp, but it could really be worth it in the long run. Give it a try. If she gets belligerent, take the truck, back it up to her door and tell her you're there to get the fridge.
The problem with hauling her into court; you will no doubt get your judgment but what will you have? A piece of paper saying she owes you $250 plus costs.
