Question are we responsible for our son 's action?

Sir/ madam

My son age 17 was caught shoplifting at a canadian retail store. Dur to his age , they did not pursue him with a criminal record. However, the retail lawyer sent us a bill of 500 dollars for my son actions!

My wife and I are seperated and neither her or myself could afford paying this bill ? Can they make us pay?

Please adviseus what we can do ?

Regards

Sam
