I received the same sort of summons in the mail, but there is no mention of having to give them an answer. Instead, they have a hearing date set. If I do not show up, the document states that a judgment may be entered against me by default. My question is; because there is a hearing date already set, is this a more serious form of complaint than the one that is mentioned above which just asks to reply with an answer?

No--it is the same thing normally.

Call the clerk of the court to ask what is gong to happen that day. Is it pre-trial activity or is the entire case going forward.
