For nations that adhere to the U.N. convention, there are only certain maritime claims (or civil claims involving sea vessels) that may be used to validate a ship arrest. This includes any disputes that arise regarding loss/damage to vessels, injury or loss of life directly related to ship operations, salvage agreements, potential damage from a ship to the environment, removal of a ship that has sunk, agreements relating to expected ship operations, loss or damage of goods carried by ship, towage and pilotage expenses, goods/materials needed for ship maintenance, port and harbor fees, wages due to officers, owners, or other crew members, insurance premiums, and ship ownership or earnings.
