Father of child is in jail, name on birthcertificate issue -- Michigan (MI)

hi i live in macomb (fraser) michigan the father of my unborn child does not deny being my daughters father. he wants to be on the birth certificate, and wants to be in her life. he already said he would sign the paturnity papers. the issue i am having is we cant mail them for the reason that he is in there for back child support so he is unable to get money on his books to be able to get envolopes or stamps or whatever so he would not be able to send it back and also the way the county jails visting is, is behinde glass so he wouldnt be able to just sign it at a visitation. i don't know what to do. please help. thank you!

Wow... so the guy is in jail, serving time for failure to pay support for his other child(ren), and you decided it would be a good idea to have another child with him that he probably won't support, either?

If you had an attorney go there with the papers, they would very likely allow him to sign. Of course, that won't make him responsible for your child.

If you expect him to actually pay child support, you will need to take him to court to FORMALLY establish paternity and have them issue a support order. Then, considering his history of NOT paying to support his other child(ren), you would probably need to go through the local Child Support Enforcement Agency to have them enforce the support order.

I certainly wouldn't count on him to support the child voluntarily.

There is an affidavit of paternity form for Michigan which may be found online, as you probably know. If you cannot get anything to him, even by mail with postage paid return envelopes or get it to him through the warden, then there is nothing I can see you can do. If he has an attorney who gets to see him, perhaps through his lawyer.
