Conslidation of Spousal Support and Child Support Tax Question

For tax purposes I was awarded child support in the amount of $588 a month for custody of my son. However I have to pay my wife $1280 a month in Spousal Support/APL. For efficiency sake the court consolidated both and cancelled my child support so that I pay her approximately $700 a month. Since child support is not income and not tax deductible to her. My question is when I report alimony paid do I report the true cost of what the court ordered or because of the consolidation the actual cost of my wages being garnished.

You are correct in that child support is not taxable to the recipient nor deductible by the payor. Spousal support is both -- taxable to the recipient and deductible by the payor.

When support is consolidated, both spousal and child support, then the entire amount is deductible by the payor and is considered taxable income to the recipient. I trust this answers your question.
