My son is born an united states citizen. He is 14 and has traveled out of the country before. At the end of June this year he went to Colombia w/ his mother(her native country) and was only supposed to stay for 3weeks. She has made excuses why she couldn't return on scheduled date and as of 2 days ago has stopped all email contact and phone contact. He is now there 5 weeks. What can I do to get my son home safely without having to travel myself?

I wish to inform you that you can file a complaint for child abduction. In Columbia the family courts of Columbia deal with child custody cases under Hague Convention. The courts have the power to enforce child custody order from your US Court. Generally Columbia courts apply their law and thus you must show that best interest of child are met if child comes to USA and live with you.

If the facts are true his mother is answerable for child abduction. You can file a petition before the US Court for child abduction by the non custodial parent. Remember in child custody cases court will consider the best interest of the child. As Colombia is a member to Hague convention the Court order from US can be enforced in Colombia. It is better advised that you may consult with a Family law Attorney who can give a proper guidance in this regard.
