I have a 2 and 8 month old son. I have been supporting him all this time with no help from the father. His name is not on the birth certificate. He has seen my son a total of 3 times within this time frame but less than 2 hours each time. Now out of the blue, He contacts me wanting to be part of my son's life. He is in the military and states that he could use his influences to take my son if I don't willingly allow him to see my son. He already has a wife and other children. Can he really just show up and take my son from me? What can I do?

He will be able to get some kind of visitation normally--courts want both parents involved. But you can also ask that it be reasonable and that it comport with your schedules etc.

So, then I have to expect that I have to share custody with the father even though he hasn't been there for my child. Even though he chose to stay away? It doesn't seem fair.

Not share custody, but some visitation would normally be ordered by most courts if he wants it.
