again I can only site my own experience but no a parent cannot sign away a child without the other parent knowing. My hubby adopted a child in FL he had to go to prison to have the guy sign him over... so, as far as I know both parents need to be aware of it. My pal knew as well in Wa.

Now a child at 18 can change their own name legally without mom or dad knowing.

free or cheap lawyers can only be found locally. The best way to find that is to contact your state bar association.

If she gets married it doesn't guarantee the new husband will adopt (and that can only happen with you OK'ing it).

If she applies for a name change, you have to sign it or she has to attempt to notify you if she doesn't know where you live. If there are court papers be sure to keep them up to date on your address if you don't want this to happen.

I'm confused whether you want nothing to do with this child or not.... If you want to get an attorney...a couple of things could happen. Ask family to help with a "retainer" fee (this is a large fee paid up front to cover costs). If you don't have family that can assist but you are working, start calling and making appointments with attorneys. Promise say $25 a week payment plan (more if they scoff and you can afford it without being homeless). Think about things you can cut back on...eating out, beer, pizza...

You can file wherever the child's State of residence is.

I lost custody of my 9yr old daughter in 2007. I haven't had any visitation since Feb 2008 Due to her father not complying with court order. I keep going to court to get my visitation rights. It is about Jan 2013, & she is 14 yrs old. It is now her decision to see me thru family therapy. Due to such a time lapse, she's scared to see me. Doesn't the court order over ride her hesitation to visit me? Since its been 5yrs & she wants to see me, but she refuses to start the process. Do I need her father & step mothers agreement of my termination? Does the 14yr old child have a choice in that matter? How do I get their approval?
