Default grandparent with temporary custody

I was awarded temporary custody of my grandchild about 2 wks. ago. The child's mother picked her up from my home on Saturday and told me that she'd bring her back by 5:00 pm. At 10:00 pm, she hadn't shown up or called and wouldn't answer her cell phone. She wasn't at her home and I was concerned so I called the sheriff's office and was told that I could not file a missing person report, even after the required 24 hrs., because I only had temporary custody and the child left with her mother. She did return her late Sunday night, but my question is, if this happens again, how am I supposed to know if they've been in an accident or the mom has taken her out of state or is just being spiteful, which was the case this time. Exactly what rights does my temporary custody give me?

You'd probably have to check with your attorney if you have one.

Filing for contempt of court would be my guess as the only attempt to solve this...

I do have an attorney and he filed the original petition for temporary custody but didn't explain much to me at all. I've been leaving messages at his office for a week now and he doesn't return my calls. I understood the man at the sheriff's office to tell me that I had no right to report my granddaughter as "missing" because she was with her biological mother and I only have temporary custody.
Any other suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
