Default Paying child support from severance package?

I live in California, was just laid off and was given a severance package of 5 weeks salary. I currently pay $1200/month in support for my teenage daughter (50/50 custody).

My question is: do I need to continue paying the full child support while I am unemployed, since I have the severance package? (My unemployment benefit is going to be $1800/month - roughly 25% of my normal salary) my ex does not work due to a "disability" claim. My wife works fulltime, earning about $70K.

Go to the child support agency and explain your situation. You may just end up in arrears...Or maybe you can get a temporary reprieve.

...and go RIGHT AWAY.
They can temporarily lower your support obligation, but not retroactively. You will continue to accumulate arrears as if you were fully employed until you can make new arrangements with them.
