Default Child support from prison; I did not file for support for fear

I have a child with a man who is about to go to prison. He abandoned the baby back in October and we have no contact. I did not file for support for fear he would hurt my child in visitation. I have heard he is looking at 10-15 years. Can I file for support after he goes to prison? My friend mentioned the state would pay it and he would be responsible when he gets out. Is this correct?

Doesn't sound right to me.
More likely, you will file for public assistance and then the State will pursue support from the father to recover any financial assistance provided to you on behalf of your child.

actually both are correct. my oldest son is in prison and has left a child with his ex. if the man is working in prison, you can have his wages garnished. keep in mind that he is going to earn less than a dollar a day so you are going to get about 65 cents. you can go and apply for government assistance and when he gets out, they will garnish his wages to get paid for what they paid you. get in touch with your local child support enforcement and they wil walk you through the process

Also if he has any outside income or savings or assets from before he went to prison, those can sometimes be taken as well.
