How does one go about picking the right lawyer? Randomly picking one out of the phone book isn't the most appealing idea for me.

References.
Also, many of your local court's records and dockets may be available online, and would list the names of the attorneys. You could find one with good experience this way, or one who has already handled a case similar to yours.

Um..... the old which juris doctor to pick? Let me see S.J.D. OR J.S.D. Non trial lawyers are a B but LL is often the better lawyer and often the highest degree.good luck S.J.D. or scientum juris doctor.LITERALLY ''doctor of juridicial science'' is the highest obtainable degree in U.S. take your pick not only case law but how many times they won. good luck. My lawyer is a retired judge. She will do just about anything i ask her for me where law is concerned for $1000 flat fee lawyers don't always have to be exspensive. She has a S.J.D. degree.

My case isn't too complicated, or at least it shouldn't be. Our son is 4 months old, we had an oral agreement on child support and visitation. Child support is always on time and has even increased from the original agreement (which I don't mind paying), but visitation has become dependant on her whims. So I just want to get a set visitation schedule that she will have to abide by. "Seems" simple enough.

It's good you have a positive attitude on paying support! but maby it's time for an enfocible maritial settelment agrement from the court. That way it won't be at anybodys wihim about visitation is child support you pay go through court or child support enforcement?

I pay child support directly to her and we were never married. I talked to child support enforcement and they said it was fine if I pay directly to her and that I don't need to go through them unless she opens a case against me.

Check the laws of your State, friend.
In Ohio, any payments made directly to the custodial parent or considered a "gift", and do NOT count towards child support. You could find yourself thousands of dollars in arrears.
Good fences make good neighbors. Get a judgment on visitation and a judgment on support.

Oh don't think she wont open a case on you.opening child support cases by women is all over this board.Get a good lawyer and a direct order thru the court. Now if in fact she does open a child support case she will forget all you ever paid in child support and then you will be in arrears. Literally wheather or not at this point if she files for child support depends on the man she is with ''jodi'' her new boyfriend will want you to pay. Even if she don't. ''Take no prisoners'.'
