Default Is "parental alienation syndrome" a real medical condition

Is "parental alienation syndrome" a real medical condition that a mother has to be treated for?

It seems unclear to me from what I see all over the web?

Parental Alienation Syndrome has NOT gained recognition as a psychological disorder.

Some very poor US case law has recognized it in child custody disputes. It is vastly preferable to avoid it in my opinion. If one parent is alienating the child take steps to correct it, but let's not pretend it is some mental condition.

Thankfully the entire reputable medical community has rejected this nonsense.

Confused Re: Is "parental alienation syndrome" a real medical condition

Hi I am a 43 year old mother of 7 and have 7 grand children, and I am personally experiencing parental alienation, and if there is any body out there that would like to know? what it feels like, that hasn't, had it happen to them! well put it this way, your life has no meaning, and all you feel like doing is curling up and dying.

So if th at is not a reason for it to be a medical condition, that is caused by people that would rather hurt you in the most cruelest of ways, because you asked for there help and refused, after being told you have a life threating condition, god help use all!

Is someone alienating your children against you? Or your grandchildren? I can't figure out what your situation is from your post.

Dear Gran,

It seems maybe you mean somebody has been alienation the children from you and you wish to see them. I agree that is terrible if the case.

I was talking about something a little different...

PAS some argue is a so-called syndrome that the parent suffers that causes them to alienate the kids from the other parent or grandparent etc.

Some parents may do this and it is terrible but it is not a psychological disease.

Parental alienation syndrome is not currently considered a syndrome by the American Psychological Association and that a lack of empirical studies fail to support its existence.

According to professionals in the field, of which I am one, PAS is a syndrome (a collection of related symtoms with a common cause) of children. That is children who have been exposed to alienating behaviors of one parent may eventually succomb to the lies and manipulations and come to reject the targeted parent. These children can be said to have the syndrome if they exhibit the 8 symtoms. Children who reject an abusive parent (i.e., they have good cause for rejecting a parent) do not exhibit the 8 symptoms and do not have PAS. It is only considered PAS when children reject an otherwise adequate parent after having been exposed to parental alienation strategies. I hope that clarifies the situation. PAS has not been widely discredited and there is even some evidence in support of it. However, it has not made its way into the American Psychiatric Association's Diagnostic manual (DSM-IV) partly because the manual was last updated in mid 1990s and the syndrome was too new at that time to be included.

Thanks for clarifying things!
By the way, what are the "8 symptoms"?

Hello,

I'm Bryan Lee McGlothin and live in Washington State, US. I was abducted by my father at age 2. I endured years of parental alienation before I finally found my mother when I was 33. For an abducting parent to succeed, they must impliment parental alianation in order to control the child.

I can attest to fact that parental abduction is child abuse and that parental alienation syndrome (PAS) does exist. Dr. Amy baker is one of the new front runners in the study of parental alienation. I recomend her book and paper as she noted above.

I speak publicly on the subject of parental abduction and will speak at the DC Festival 2008 “Family Preservation Festival” August 15th at 6p.m. at the Hyatt Regency, next to the festival at Upper senate Park

I am also the author of Have You Seen My Mother: A True Story of Parental Kidnap and will be signing my book at the festival.

In September I'll be speaking at the 17th ISPCAN International Congress on Child Abuse and Neglect in Hong Kong.
XVIIth ISPCAN International Congress on Child Abuse and Neglect

I hope to see you in DC or Hong Kong as we fight for the rights of the children.
