Please lend some help
I have an odd situation. My ex-girlfriend has recently sued me for child support of our 4year old. I have been paying her child support privatly bi-weekly since our split. I am on the birth certificate, but am questioning the paternity at this time. She wants to increase the amount I am currently paying her. I also have an 8 year old that I am legally paying child support to from a previous marriage. My ex-girlfriend currently receives more than my ex-wife, and wants to increase that amount. I do not have the funds for legal advice. My questions are:
Can I request a paternity test now even though I am on the birth certificate? If the test proves me to be the father I am unsure of the steps I will need to take. |

Hello there,
I'm sorry for this frustrating time, it sounds like you are just trying to do the right thing, good for you. You can request a paternity test from a private company that can be used for legal purposes should the need arise. You do not need a court order. DNA Diagnostics Center is the world's largest private paternity lab, they have 2500 locations nationwide and globally so you can schedule an appointment for your cheek swab in your city or state. You can visit DNA Testing Services from the World Leader in Paternity Testing for more information, it looks like their phone number is on the website. I hope this information helps! Good luck! --ES |

You can do so yes, but in some jurisdictions you can still be deemed to be the father if you fail to act after some period of time, even if you try to contest it.
So it is always best to act ASAP if you have any question. |

Identigene has a paternity test that is being sold at RiteAid and Meijer's drug stores for $29.99 with a $119.00 lab fee. It seems worth the cost to find out the truth.
