Minors invloved in accident

If my 16 year old son has his own car and his own insurance policy and he is involved in an auto accident can I be sued?? He wants his own "cheap" policy with bare bones coverage. If he gets into an accident and he doesn't have enough coverage can I be sued in civil court because he is still a minor?? When I'm I legally not responsible for my son??

It is possible yes until he is 18.

if my biological child got into my car and without my knowledge and hit another car while I was visiting him in a foster home and I am not his legal guardian and do not live with him or have any legal resposibility to him as decided by the court, am I responsible for the damages?
