Charged for Careless Driving -- I need to win the case because of insurance

Hello, I recently just got into a car accident and was charged for careless driving as I had fallen asleep at the wheel during a long car ride at around 12 am. I have a court date this week. The truth is I ate Mc Donalds before leaving Kingston on the way to Toronto and it made me sleepy, but my mother told me that I should say that I had an allergy pill before and that is what made me sleepy. We need to win this case because I won't be able to afford insurance if I lose and I need the car to get to college. I don't want to lie to the judge, but I'm pretty sure that the night of the accident the police man had asked if I had taken any medication that night and I said no. I wanted to just tell the truth (about eating McDonalds previously) but my mother said that it was not good enough to win my case. What would be best to do in order to win my case?

Tell the truth but frankly a lawyer dealing with auto cases will do MUCH better than you can do yourself.
If it is important, hire a lawyer to help.
