Default Hit-and-run on my parked car

I have a question, I hope someone can give me some guidance and direction.

Last night someone hit my car and tore off the front bumper. In addition to the body damage, the vehicle would not start, and I had to get it towed back home. A witness wrote down the license plate of the car that hit mine...it was a U-Haul truck, and according to other witnesses, the guy stopped long enough to see that he had caused serious damage, then took off.

I am wondering how I should proceed. Unfortunately, the insurance I carry is Liability Only. My insurance company already told me they can't do anything for me to collect money for the damages. This is something I will have to pursue on my own.

Any advice on how I should proceed? Is the best course of action to contact a lawyer and take it from there? There is serious damage to my car, and it turns my stomach to think that I might have to eat up the cost of repairs. Any and all help is truly appreciated.

Of course, I will now look into a full coverage insurance plan. Live and learn.........

Contact the police asap--what he did is a crime and they will pick him up.

Hi annjd,

Thanks for the reply. I forgot to mention that I immediately filed a police report on the scene. I have not heard any updates, though. I figure that the guy should be pretty easy to track down, unless he fled town. The officer wrote down the license plate, ran it through, and it came back as belonging to a U-Haul truck.

They should find him and will surely do so but it sometimes helps to remind them and keep it active.
