Confused Should I Pay?

Basics:

I don't feel I was at fault for the accident, damages total $412, is it worth fighting or should I just pay it? Could I take him to small claims to have this reversed or something? I dont want to sue but I dont feel I should pay.

More Detail:

I was following another car on a busy main street. I entered a lane to my left with my blinker on, got completely infront of the other driver, he moved into his left lane and then tried to force his way back into my lane by re-entering the lane I was in directly to the left of me causing a long white scratch on the right side of his car. This was my 1st accident, I wasnt really sure what to do so I pulled onto a side street to get out of traffic and stop the car I was following. There happened to be police on the corner, this was about 10pm at night so I didnt want to stop in the middle of whatever they were doing there but the other driver did and told the cops to arrest me for hit and run. They didnt, because I wasnt running away, I hadnt even made it half-way down the street. I was in a rental and didnt get the insurance that would cover damage to someone elses car and since my car wasnt in the shop my insurance company wont cover me even though I got the rental because my car was not in the best condition for long distance driving.

I've already paid $300 something to pay for a course that I had to take to drop the hit and run charges, allowed because I didnt have a previous record. Every lawyer I called just said you might as well pay it cause you cant afford me, basically.

Default Re: Should I Pay?

You can certainly take the matter to small claims w/o a lawyer.
