08/2007 accident / uncashed insurance check / can I still get med help?

Hi,

I'm not sure what to do.

In Aug. 2007 I was in a car accident where the other party was held 100% responsible. My car was considered a total loss and I was mailed a check for the value of the car. The check to this day has not been cashed (read: I have not accepted any money from the insurance co.).

The day of the accident I went to the hospital and was checked out. They said everything was fine and I would be sore, but would get better.

Here I am 1 year and 5 months later with a constant pain in my chest (sternum) which has been going on since the accident. I assume the pain is from the seat belt and/or airbag.

I don't currently have health insurance, and didn't at the time. Therefore, I don't have a regular doctor and really need to get looked at. The only time I was seen by a doctor was the day of the accident.

Will the insurance cover future doctor visits? Is my claim closed if I have not accepted money?

What happens in a case like mine? How do I find a doctor?

P.S. I know I should have acted sooner, but I just kept thinking the pain would go away, like they said. Please don't tell me the should haves. This is something I now know, and don't need that.
