Confused Insurance loophole!!...???

Friday I was in a car accident. I gave the officer at the seen my insurance card and also at the hospital where I went for my knee. Saturday morning I sent a payment online. Knowing that my payment was do and also hearing storys that my insurance might go up. Later that day I call the main officer to my car insurance. I explained that I make a payment online early today using my insurance online account payment. The operator told me that she will make a note on the computer for the payment online. Wile she was talking with me never once asked me if I was in a car accident. Sunday I filed a claim online using my insurance account. Later that day I received a phone confirming my online claim. I explained what happen in the accident before she hung-up she gave me a claim number and also told me to wait for the claim adjuster to contact me. Knowing that Monday was holiday, Monday I called back my insurance. I told the operator I made a payment online Saturday with there web site using my account number and asked her how soon will my money process. She told me I was late on my payment and said I was canceled.

That was the first to my knowledge that I was canceled.She told me to make payment within 24hours to be reinstated, never asked if I was in a car accident. So I went to my agent office, my agent wouldn't be in until the flowing Monday. I handed the secretary my payment in cash and I again told her I made a payment online Saturday and I will be paying double payments. Then she told me that I will be paid up to middle of this year on my insurance for two payments, again never asked if I was in an accident. She gave me a receipt and I walked out.

Tuesday was when things started to go wrong. I never received a phone call from my insurance or the claim adjuster all day. Wednesday I noticed they tock the payment out that I made online for Saturday.Icalled back again asking why I didn't hear anything back from the claim adjuster. I told the operator I made a payment Monday to be reinstated. I didn't quite understand but she said that I was in some kind of loophole. I called back again she told me to wait and my insurance will call me back. Thursday I received a letter in the mail from my insurance company for the claim. I filled it out and mailed it Thursday night.

My question is I fell in a loophole, my insurance told me I was canceled. But I was able to make a claim report online with my account, also I was given a claim number and made a payment within 24hours to be reinstated what my insurance told me to do. The officer never said anything to me about my insurance being canceled. Who should be the one liable for the car accident and did I have insurances at the time of the accident?

This is my first car accident and I never had points to my license. It's been a week now, and I just want this nightmare to end...

If it has expired they normally need not pay unless there is a grace period and they have agreed to cover you in the grace period; review your agreements carefully and seek insurance lawyer help if need be.
