Question Hit and Run

I live in Alberta, Canada.
About a month ago I let a friend practice driving with my parent's car. She had only her learner's permit, and I'm still on my graduated license, so technically she needed a fully licensed driver with her. She turned a corner too quickly and hit a private hedge. We were worried only about my parents knowing, so I went home and told them I was the on driving. The police showed up that night because someone had taken down my license plate number, and let me know that I'd committed a hit and run. I told them the same story as my parents. Now I have to appear in court in a week, and would rather tell the truth. Is the only charge I'm facing lying to a police officer, or am I also responsible for the hit and run? Please let me know what will likely occur.
Thank you!

Unhappy Re: Hit and Run

I'm getting to you too late, but I'll leave this for future visitors.

You remember the cliche about how you must keep on lying to maintain a lie, you're in a terrible predicament. I live in the states so I can only speak of what would happen in my jurisdiction. The owners of the property will make a claim against your insurance company and your rates will go up, the other part about the hit n' run is more problematic and might result in a suspension of the license and mandatory traffic school. If you already gave that fabricated report to the police and they have it on file, go on with it, because I have a feeling your "friend" will not agree to change her story to protect you and put the blame on herself and her case is stronger than yours. The thing I would do is that if your friend is working, ask for a cut of her wages for a while to pay for your troubles. Even if the court believed you were merely a passenger, you still will get flak.
