Default Is it Illegal to keep money from auto insurance?

Is it illegal in New York state to keep the extra money that you did not need to use to repair your car your insurance co approved?

Thanks!

Not strictly illegal but your loan agreement if you still have one normally does not permit that.

You normally would have to coordinate that with your lender.
