Roofing contractor filed bankruptcy and took our money.

Nothing has been done to our house. We heard the roofing company has filed bankruptcy. We haven't heard from them for almost two months. The phone numbers have been disconnected. We did have a contract with them but I don't know that it will do much good if they are bankrupt. The insurance company will not go after them. What recourse do we have?

Bankruptcy filings are a matter of public record. So you may check with the bankruptcy court and if he has filed, be sure you are listed as a creditor. His assets will be listed and sold, if any, and creditors paid according proportionately to what is left.


Where states license contractors, you can also file a complaint with your state's licensing board for contractors. If he is bonded, his insurance company may pay your claim.
