Am I required to give notice?

My boss has been talking about other employees behind their backs, and I wonder if I am included in the mix. He's also called out employees on the spot before, and if I ever feel it is unjustified and it happens to me, I will likely quit on the spot. Can he legally withhold my checks for leaving without giving notice/walking out?

I live in Unionville, Connecticut.
