Unhappy Engagement Breakup - Money Owed

What are the laws for breech of verbal contract in the state of Florida? My
ex fiance agreed to pay the deposit money lost on our wedding. He even wrote me a check and stopped payment on it, which I have copies of all documents. I even had to pay a stop payment fee from my bank. What can I do? Go to smalls claims court or what are the next steps I need to take?
