Confused Son is going AWOL in Army

My 22 y/o son is in his 3rd week of boot camp in s. Carolina......the military assigned him a secondary MOS (job title) of infantryman. (against his permission)........his first MOS is Human resources specialist...............my son doesn't want to continue in the Army - they told him he could just walk away. If he does walk away is this considered being AWOL, and what are the ramifications. Can he do jail time - does it go on his record as a deserter? Dishonorable discharge?
