Confused Rental Fees

After living in my apartment for twenty years, new owners bought the property two years ago. They say I must remove my air conditioners from the windows. The storage area are no longer available to tenants per management. The only place to keep the air conditioners would be to have them sitting around in the apartment. I received notice yesterday that I now owe them $50 per month for each month I don't remove them from the window. I want to know if they have the legal right to impose such a fee.

They have to have a good reason or you have to have agreed in your new lease.

Otherwise you may take them to small claims for any storage or removal fee with which you disagree.

Why do they want them removed? For appearances or for safety or what?

They claim that by having the air conditioner in during the winter months is prevents the other units (there are 4 units per building) from getting the full benefit of the heat. In other words the unit in my window is causing the other apartments to be cold. I say the other apartments are cold be cause management keeps the heat at the bare minimum which is 68 degrees. The heat is included in the rent.
