Mislead by a law firm?

I live in Upstate New York and had left town for New York City after a domestic incident with my husabnd. I retained a divorce attorney in NYC only to find out later that the divorce proceedings had to occur in Buffalo and that I needed to retain another attorney there. I feel as though I was mislead by the attorney in NYC. Is it common practice for a law firm to accept a client who will ultimately need representation elsewhere? Knowing that I have lived in Buffalo for the past 6 years with my husband and our two children, should they have accepted my retainer and agreed to represent me?
