Default Will The “Baddest” Lawyer In Jersey Be His Own?

Trials in which lawyers are defendants always raise the interest level for us here at the Law Blog -- and how much more so when that lawyer may be defending himself.



When we consider as well that this particular defendant, Paul Bergrin, has been dubbed “the baddest lawyer in the history of Jersey,” it seems clear that the trial, set to begin in October, could be a doozy.

Its been a while since we visited with Bergrin, the flamboyant Newark, N.J. lawyer who has pleaded not guilty in a racketeering case to charges of murder, conspiracy, drug dealing, prostitution and witness intimidation. Bergrin, who faces a life sentence, reportedly had in his criminal-defense work a favorite saying, “no witness, no crime.”
