Default Hiring question for all attorneys

State: Ohio

I am a recent graduate with my B.S. Degree as a Paralegal. My question is: With no formal hands-on experience as a paralegal yet, how can I go about getting an attorney or firm to even give me a chance for an interview?

As I said above, I do not have any formal experience but have been through the court system on several occasions. When I was 22 I took my mother to court for custody of my two younger siblings (she was heavily involved with drugs). Even though she had an excellent attorney, I won the case. Over the years she has taken me back to court over 13 times trying to get custody back having an attorney each time. I have represented myself each time and won. I am currently 32 so this has been over a 10 year span.

I know this is something I cannot put in a resume nor would I want to bring it up in an interview because the disfunction of my family could make me look bad, but I learned quite a bit on law, research and the process of court trials.
I have also been an Emergency Medical Technician for the past 11 years so my medical knowledge is excellent, but I have even applied to Personal Injury firms and have not been called for an interview.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated. I am an extremely competent individual who will work hard to learn everything I can, I just need the opportunity and some advice to get my foot in the door.

Thank you in advance.

I wish to inform you that you can have sent your resume to family law lawyers. In this, you may mention that you have experience in family law cases without mentioning name of the cases as they involve you and your family. If law firm asks then you can explain the work performed by you. Further, you may refuse to provide case names as you may say it is confidential. Although you are having experience in your own personal cases only, but the fact that you have gained knowledge must not be overlooked and thus you may write about your experience in family law matters. In this, you may just mention about brief work performed by you so that lawyer firm may know about your capabilities.

From your experience it seems that you will be fit to work as a paralegal. It is sure that your personal experience will have a high hand in getting a post as a paralegal. You may send your resume to reputed law firms. In your resume you may give a brief description as to your experience with court system. So don’t waste your time just start your search. All the best!
