Default Highest Paid Lawyers in the United States

The highest paid attorneys are generally plaintiff's lawyers who handle class action or serious personal injury, wrongful death, product liability, medical malpractice lawsuits. Next in line would be attorneys who handle major corporate law and/or in-house counsel for multi-billion dollar companies, etc. Patent law, commercial real estate, entertainment law and high profile criminal law would most likely follow. These categories overlap depending on the particular cases the attorney may handle.

Question:

What type of lawyer is the highest paid in the United States?

Answer:

Quote:
Patent attorneys are currently paid the most on average for entry level attorneys. A newly licensed patent attorney can expect to earn $100,000-$150,000 his/her first year out of law school (depending on the market). Other first year attorneys might expect something closer to $60,000-$80,000 their first year.

Still, how much you make depends not just on the type of law that you practice, but what kind of firm you work for, how many hours you work, what kind of clients you get, etc. A lot depends on the reputation of the attorney, the market, the attorney's business contacts, etc.

Question:

How much money will a family lawyer be making in the Unites States?

Answer:

Quote:
Lawyers will all earn different amounts depending on the city, the types of clients served, and how much he or she is willing to work. However, family lawyers tend to be paid less than other types of lawyers. A reasonable range for a family lawyer in a medium to large city would be $100,000-$200,000.

Question:

Highest paid field of law in the U.S.?

Answer:

Quote:
The answer to this question depends on the market that you work in (with NY and the SF Bay area being the highest) and the type of work you do.

It can be emphatically stated that attorneys in the non-profit sector make the least (but their job satisfaction derives from whom the help instead of the pay) and those in the private sector make the most.

I know some Personal injury attorneys who are well off because they either win or settle high value claims (30-40% contingency fees). But the risk is that you don't get any income if you lose these contingency cases.

As for as stable and consistent income, I would say that the corporate partners (those handling M&A's, IPOS, and many transactional affairs) of large firms such as Winsoni, Fenwick, Perkins Coie etc make the most change because they oversee the legal billing of multi-national companies.

For a better understanding of legal salaries you should go to Greedy Associates (www.greedyassociates.com). This site breaks down the salaries and bonuses of the top law firms in the country.
