Default Crime of attempt to possess

I was wondering if anyone could give me some information on the crime of attempt. My child was charged with an "attempt to possess" based on text messages sent to another kid who was selling prescription drugs. My child never purchased anything and they never made any definate plans to exchange money or pills. My child asked the other kid "how much for how many". In your opinion, is this enough for a DA to charge my child with an "attmept to possess"? Do you think a competent lawyer could get this charge dismissed, and is there a lesser charge than "attmept to possess" that could be plea bargained to?

Thanks
