I saw someone in a vehicle throw beer bottles in my yard so I quickly got into my car and chased them down to get the license number.
I got the number but now I'm told I could be in trouble for chasing them down. This sounds weird to me since that was the only way I could identify the vehicle that is probably the one trashing yards on our street. Can I get into legal trouble chasing someone like that? |

It is not illegal to follow them and get the info. You cannot endanger the vehicles etc. of course.

If that's the case then just what defines a chase?
There was one person in that vehicle and just me in my vehicle. No speeds over the limit and got the plate number in less than a mile. There was enough traffic to slow the guy down. Is it terminology or just what is a "CHASE" in the eyes of the law? What could I be charged with? |

If you endanger or threaten, that can be illegal. Following and noting the license plate is 100% not illegal.

New Development:
A Deputy Sheriff came to the house today and questioned me about the chase incident and I told him I did chase the guy to get his plate number but it wasn't a chase like a movie scene or threatening anybody. So, maybe my choice of words is incorrect and should have said followed. Anyway, here is my question: I wasn't read any rights and was just talking to the guy straight-up and problems around here. Since i wasn't read my rights I think that terminology shouldn't be held against me in a court if it comes to that. Apparently the guy I followed made a complaint. I don't really know. So, since I used the word "CHASE" is that an admission of guilt? Can that be used against me in court if it comes to that? |

Just say you followed him to get the plate and nobody was put in danger. You do have a right to identify who it was. No prosecutor can prosecute for that.
