Does a Walmart security guard have the right to use force

Does a store security guard have the right to use force to the point that it causes sever brusing and pain? Recently a local walmart security guard detained an alleged "shoplifter", with no reseintance from the shoplifter the guard continued to apply extreme force to the shoplifters arm all long the person was walking with guard to office. With so much force it caused the person to double over in pain from the elbow and arm being hyperextended and squeezed. Eventually the guards pushed the shoplifter down and sat on top of the person. Taking into count the guard was approximately 290 lb male --
