Petty Theft Charge in Milpitas, California

My question involves criminal law for the state of: California

Got cited for a petty theft misdemeanor ticket from the police for 484(a) PC Petty Theft and have a court date tomorrow

I donot know what to tell the judge other then that I am sorry for what I did.. I have not seeked legal counsel but based on reading some of the forums looks like i should have..

In any case, what are my options when I go in front of the judge tomorrow.

- Ask for a continuation and seek legal counsel?
- Ask the judge to provide me public defender instead?
- Ask to be sent to community service?
- Do I have to enter a plea tomorrow?

I cry every time I think about it and need your guidance to get me through this unfortunate incident
