Default Notification?

I live in California and still awaiting trial. My friend had just picked up his car from the the impound lot and I was just wondering if Is it mandatory for the lot to tell the owner of anything taken out of the car for evidence. Because a camera is missing and has nothing in it that relates to anything to do with what me and his brother are being charged and arrested for or of any illegal material in it?
