Illegal adoption

Back in the late 90's i had custody of my daughter. I was young and not so smart at the time as we all go through this I suppose! Anyways, I was incarcerated and gave my daughters maternal grandma temporary guardianship until I was to get out in 6months or less. When I was released, the grandma informs me that I nor my family can have any form of contact whatsoever because she legally adopted her by saying I had abandoned her and could not be found. I sighned no papers. Did not go to court and have no adoption decree. I am in my late 30's now and I am dying inside without my child! Can this all be legal or even possible? What can I do? Where can I get a copy of the adoption papers if there are any because I don't have my daughters SS# but i do know every other bit of info including her address. I am a very hard working man. I barely live week to week so I can't afford an expensive attorney. What do I do? Please Help! Desperate In Indiana!
